POSTED: 6:26 pm EDT July 6, 2011WASHINGTON COUNTY — Community leaders and volunteers in one county in the East are working together with a goal of teaching others how to grow their own food on their own land.Several people in Plymouth in Washington County have built an agri-business, tailored for minorities, from the ground up.Starting from just an idea in 2008, and with support from North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina State University, three high-tunnel houses were built earlier this year at 232 McNair Road in Plymouth to grow fresh, organic vegetables, like tomatoes, zucchini and squash.But these vegetables weren’t planted just to grow them. Instead, they were grown to change the way of thinking about agriculture in the African American community.Pastor Eddie McNair, of the Fountain of Life Full Gospel Baptist Church in Roper, is the project leader.”We’re trying to get our people to understand that the land is their inheritance. It’s a legacy for them. And if you have land, you can always survivie. So we’re trying to teach them how to grow food,” McNair said.Work is also underway on an on-site training center in hopes of educating others about what they can grow on their own land.”This is something that we can do to bring jobs to the community,” McNair said.Leaders will host a grand opening of the agri-business site from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, July 7th, at 232 McNair Road in Plymouth. All of those interested in this project are encouraged to attend.
